Before this trip, liveaboards traveling between Raja Ampat and Triton Bay had largely ignored Fakfak, which had only two recorded sites: one around Pisang, a small island group northwest .

Later, I’m walking back, and I pass by a market on Jalan Pahlawan. The smells are insane! Fresh fruits, spices, and street food. I grab some pisang goreng (fried bananas) and they’re heavenly. I’m munching away, and this old lady starts chatting me up. She’s telling me about the history of Fakfak, how it used to be a trading port. I’m nodding along, but honestly, I’m just trying not to choke on my snack.
